Raat Chor Aur Chand is a Hindi serial based on a novel written by the prominent Urdu writer Balwant Singh broadcast on the DOORDARSHAN channel. This story is set in the pre-independence era in Punjab and the family that is shown in this story is a farmer’s family. In episode one, it is shown that a man named Pali Singh is imprisoned for almost two years and six months for attacking a lieutenant. His family is grieving for him. They are trying to find ways for reducing his sentence and believe that he is innocent. It is shivering cold and Pali has to suffer from all these hardships in prison. The policemen also know that he is innocent. They want to know his story and ask him why he is in prison. They sit beside the fire and Pali starts telling them his story.

Pali and his family lived in a village. People seem unhappy that their village is not as united as it was before. A group of dacoits raids the village. Pali’s mother on hearing the gunshots started thinking of Pali’s father. He was a brave man but was caught by the government and given a death sentence when trying to save his village. His friend Jwala Singh escaped from the police. Now Pali wants to do the same. But his mother didn’t let him go. Dacoits come and loot the village. Pali’s mother reminds the villagers of his father who would have done anything to save the village. But the villagers make fun of his bravery and mock him. Pali is greatly wounded by these remarks. Meanwhile, Jwala Singh is also being mocked by his villagers, even his own brother and sister. Jwala hates that Niranjan works for the British government. Niranjan Singh wants to send his daughter to the city for higher studies. Now the next part of the story is dedicated to the love story of Pali and Niranjan’s daughter. Both decide to go to the city together. Pali goes first and just tells Niranjan’s daughter where he is going. And then Niranjan’s daughter also moves to that city and their love story begins.
