He is renowned for his contributions to Hindi and Bengali Cinema. Early on in his life, Bandyopadhyay had an avid interest in painting. He attended an Art school after completing his matriculation. However, he initially started as an actor, essaying many famous and beloved characters, with almost 33 films to his credit. He turned heads as the lead in his 1946 debut feature Pratima. Other works include Mrigayaa (1977), Sati (1989), Agantuk (1991) and Baksho Rahashya (1996). Bandyopadhyay entered the Art Designing field by working as an assistant art director in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s debut film Musafir (1957).

Working alongside Mukherjee, who happens to be his brother-in-law, he was instrumental in defining the simple and frugal aesthetic of Middle-class centric films in Hindi cinema in the late 1960s and the 1970s. Mukherjee’s rejection of the grand aesthetic of contemporary artists complemented the understated subtlety of Bandyopadhyay’s style. Bandyopadhyay’s works as an Art director garnered him national recognition and numerous accolades. He won the Filmfare award for Best Art Director in the Black and White Category two years in a row for Majhli Didi (1967) and Anokhi Raat (1968). In a long and illustrious career spanning almost four decades, he also tried his hand at Direction, debuting with the Bengali film Ratan Lal Bangali (1960). He went on to direct two more feature-length films. He died at the age of 94 in December 2004.
