Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay is an Indian, Bengali author. His nickname is Runu. He was born on November 2, 1935. Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay’s birthplace is Mymensingh district, Bengal Presidency, British India (now in Bangladesh). His ancestors lived in Bainkhara, Bikrampur. During the partition, his family moved to Kolkata. He qualified intermediate from the Victoria College, Koch Bihar. He graduated with a Master’s in Bengali from Calcutta University. His nationality is Indian. His father worked in the Railways. He initiated his career as a school teacher. He is a staff member of the Bengali language “Anandabazar Patrika” at Kolkata. He is known for creating the fictional sleuths “Fatik,” “Barodacharan,” and “Shabor Dasgupta.”

He is connected with the famous Bengali magazine “Desh” and started his writing career by publishing a short story in the magazine. In 1959, his first story, ‘Jal Taranga’, was published in the magazine ‘Desh.’ He has written many stories for children and adults. In 1967, his first novel, ‘Ghun Poka,’ published in the annual Puja edition of the Desh magazine. His first children’s novel is ‘Manojder Adbhut Bari,’ published in July 1978. His famous adult fictions include ‘Manabzamin’ (1988), ‘Parthibo’, ‘Durbin,’ ‘Parapar,’ ‘Adam Eve O Andhakar,’ and so many. His famous children’s novel ‘Gosainbaganer Bhoot’ was translated into a graphic novel ‘The Ghost of Gosainbaganer.’

He also wrote a series of comic detective stories of “Goenda Baradacharan” (a Bengali fiction detective character). This character first seemed in the novel ‘Manojder Adbhut Bari.’ Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay’s many novels were later adopted in movies such as ‘Hirer Angti’ (1992), ‘Kagojer Bou’ (2011), ‘Chhayamoy’ (2013), ‘Eagoler Chokh’ (2016), ‘Manojder Adbhut Bari’ (2018), ‘Bony’, and so more. He has got honoured with many awards for his work, such as the Vidyasagar Award (1985) for his contributions to the children’s literature, Ananda Purashkar (in 1973, and again in 1990), Sahitya Akademi award (1989) for his novel Manabzamin, Banga Bibhushan award (2012), and Sahitya Akademi Fellowship (2021).
