Aditya Vikram Sengupta is a Bengali director, writer, and cinematographer who is well known for directing the films Asha JaoarMajhe and Jonaki. Aditya Vikram Sengupta was born on 6th September 1983 in Kolkata, India. He completed his schooling at St. Xavier’s Collegiate School in Kolkata. Since young, he tried his hands on various activities including painting, music, theatre, etc. Aditya Vikram Sengupta pursued his Bachelor’s degree in Literature from St. Xavier’s College. But he left his graduation halfway and joined the famous National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad, where he specialized in graphic designing. Initially, he dreamed of becoming a doctor, but changed his mind when he got engaged in music and dramatics.

Aditya Vikram Sengupta started his professional life as a Promo director in channel V from 2008 to 2011. He has worked on various ad films. Later Aditya Vikram Sengupta left the job to become a director. He directed a list of short films before, like Chhaaya in 2004, Dheel (Kite Flying) in 2006, A Song of Innocence in 2006, and Cigarettes Kill in 2007. After reading the story “Adventure of a Married Couple” by Italo Calvino, Aditya Vikram Sengupta decided to make it a movie. That’s when he started the work for his first feature film. His debut film Asha JaoarMajhe is a lyrical unfolding of a middle-class couple who works at different shifts and unvarying lives of them.

Aditya Vikram Sengupta has served as the producer, director, writer, and cinematographer for the picture. The movie received applauds from the critics for its stunning direction and even stated as one of the best films of Indian cinema. The film had a great run at several film festivals and won Best Film, Best Director, Jury Special Mention at World Premiere at the 11th Venice Days Film Festival, Jaipur International Film Festival, New York Indian Film Festival. On top of it, Aditya Vikram Sengupta won the Indira Gandhi Award for Best Debut Film at the 62nd National Film Awards.

Aditya Vikram Sengupta’s next film, Jonaki, is also a critically acclaimed movie about an older woman in her deathbed who searches for her love in a strange world. Featuring Lolita Chatterjee in the title role, the film has premiered in several film festivals, including Los Angeles Indian Film Festival and Kolkata International Film Festival. It has also bagged the Silver Gateway Award and Gender Equality Award at the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival.
