Tamal Dasgupta is a Bengali filmmaker based in Kolkata. He is a research scholar as well. Tamal is popular for his documentaries and independent films. He is an unconventional director who has garnered critical acclaim nationally as well as internationally. Tamal became interested in the world of films at the age of 11. He completed his graduation from Asutosh College in Bengali Literature in 1985. He later studied the Art of Cinema at the Film and Television Institute of India [FTII], Pune. Tamal did his research work at Jadavpur University.

Tamal has made over 16 documentaries that have gained a lot of appreciation at the international level. Some of the documentaries made by him are: ‘Those Coffee House Days’, A Poetry in Terracotta’, ‘Soul of Forest’, Art of Indian Jewellery’, Story of Pather Panchali’, and ‘Antpur Temple’. His first full-length film ‘Bhalo Mere Kharap Meye’ (2019), was showcased at several international film festivals and was felicitated with 5 International awards. His film ‘50th Anniversary’ received a Special Jury Mention at Dadasaheb Phalke Awards in 2022.
