He was born on the 6th of March, 1987, in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. He was interested in a film career since his college days and thus did his college education in the same field. He studied at the St. Xavier’s College in Kolkata. His subjects of specialization were videography and mass communication. To aid his acting job further, he studied at the renowned Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), which is in Pune. He learned video editing here.

He got involved in stage dramas from an extremely small age and was part of a group named ‘Charbak’. He was primarily involved with backstage activities, but he landed some stage roles too. For example, he engaged with the character of Topshe in Apsara Theatre-er Mania, a stage show which derived from Nobel Laureate Satyajit Ray’s book. His father himself was the director of the play and even an actor in it. He also got the opportunity to star in one of Sangbit Samaddar’s earliest plays called ‘Isolation’, while he was a student at St. Xavier’s.

After he returned with an FTII certificate, he secured a supporting role in ‘Baghnokh’, a film which got telecasted on the TV channel, ETV Bangla. Soon, he landed a role in the TV serial which got made as a tribute to Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, Gaaner Oparey. He was not the lead actor, but he received a lot of attention because of it. He played the character of the name of Prodipto Lahiri.

Soon, he was featured in his first big screen movie titled Rang Milanti, which was a romantic comedy. One of his latest ventures was ‘Advitiya’, a TV program. He won the Sobcheye Priyo Khalnayak award for this venture. His most recent work is with the 2015 film, ‘Fakebook’. He also appeared in the TV quiz show, Dadagiri Unlimited, in 2015 itself.

He made his first appearance on the big screen in Kaushik Ganguly’s Rang Milanti in 2011 which was highly complimented. Gaurav was an ardent participant in the theatre of the group Charbah. Not only did he lend a hand in the backstage as an audio technician in the play Rong, Doodh Kheyeche Meow, and Cholo Potol Tuli but also acted as Topshe in the play Apsara – theatre-er-mamla on Sabyajit Ray’s thriller under the direction of his father who graced the screen as Feluda. Gaurav was also enveloped to play the role in a documentary of HIV Aids, Isolation by teenage filmmaker Sangbit Sammadar. Gaaner oparey which was his highway to the limelight was conceived by Star Jalsha as a tribute to Rabindranath Tagore.

He also featured in the starry cast for Kaushik’s movie Laptop. This movie was chosen for screening at the Indian Panorama Section of the 24th International Film Festival of India in Goa. It also bagged a screening at the Dubai International Film Festival. Apart from all his contributions to the filmy world he has kept his theatre work alive with flowing excellence.
