He knows multiple languages like Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Nepali, and English. His birthdate is 11 July 1889. His birthplace is the village of Samdoli in Sangli district of Maharashtra. He completed high school studies at New English School, Satara. In 1904, he left his home and joined Vinayak Damodar Savarkar Abhinav Bharat Society for India's freedom movement.

In Jaipur, he has taught in the school run by freedom fighter Arjun Lal Sethi. In 1913, he returned to Satara and started translating old Marathi documents in Modi script to standard Marathi and English languages. He also worked with Dattātraya Baḷavanta Pārasanīs, who wrote a history of the Maratha people. In 1932, he joined Swayam Sevak Sangh, and in 1942, he participated in the Quit India Movement. He also helped Dadasaheb Phalke, father of Indian cinema, in his old days.

Apte worked as co-editor in Kirloskar Khabar for some period. In 1913, he founded a book publishing house, Ajinkyatara Pustkalay. In 1915, Apte started a literary and political journal named Alhad. Later, he also began the magazine Madhukar, Shriniwas Mudranalay in 1920, and publishing house Apte & Co. in 1924. Apte has written various novels and short stories based on historical and social themes, Hindu values, social beliefs, and ways to experience a happy family life. In 1909, his first novel, Ajinkyatara, was published.

His famous novels are Pahatepurwicha Kalokh, Hrudayachi Shrimanti, Na Patanari Goshta, Rajputache Bhishma, Punjabacha Ladhawayya Sikh, Javanancha Jiwandharma and many more. Banarasi Bore, Bhagyashri, Manawi Asha, Waiting Room, and Aram Wiram are the collection of short stories. Javanancha Jiwandharma (1994) was his last novel.
