KumKum Bhattacharya, a dedicated soul to music, is recognized by many ardent music lovers as one of the most exceptionally talented and versatile performers in the field of Indian Music. She was born in North Kolkata and was enriched with a rich heritage of 19th Century Renaissance Culture. She took an interest in oral music due to her mother's influence at her age. It was done as she showed outstanding talent in the field of music at a relatively early age, she was picked up for mentoring/formal training in vocal music by the Late Netai Das Sanyal, a convert of Ustad Amir Khan and then she went on to complete her initial training under the famed maestro CHINMOY LAHIRI. Under the education of this great musician about twelve times, Kumkum made significant progress. She amended her classical training by getting further assignments from USTAD SAGIRUDDIN KHAN and USTAD MUNAWAR ALI KHAN.

She added to her forte of songs by getting jobs which were more focused on light ultra-modern Bengali songs from the LATE NACHIKETA GHOSE, Tagore songs from SMT BANDANA SINGHA and Nazrul Sangeet from the LATE MANABENDRA MUKHERJEE. She also took music mentoring from the great ghazal maestro MEHDI HASSAN of Pakistan. And Thumri from S.M.T. NAINA DEVI. Kumkum graduated from Calcutta University and has added to her musical accolades the degrees of Sangeet Praveen and Sangeet Prabar (M. Music). She has suitably learned Ghazal, the language and the "M.I.Z.A.J." of Urdu poetry from famed Urdu Poet Fe Seen Ejaz. She's now attached to Arya Kanya Mahavidyalaya, Avinab Bharti School, A.I.R., Doordarshan, Bangiya Sangeet Parishad, Prayag Sangeet Samity, and Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, Mumbai. She is also associated with APPS. She performed all over India, getting appreciation from her audience for her followership and acting as a conveyor of goodwill and the spirit of public integration.

She visited Bangladesh, Nepal, London, the U.S.A., Thailand, and Japan. All over the world, she earned herself a spotlight and high applause for her selections in verses matching the tune to the best-suited" Raga and Laya". Her alluring performance nearly stole the audience's heart in the show. In 1989 Ustad Mehdi Hassan presented Kumkum at Birla Sabhaghar. She performed with Janab Gulam Ali Khan Sahab in memory of the late Ustad Munwar Ali Khan under the banner of Calcutta Music Circle, organized by Sri Badal Dhar Chowdhury. In 1992 she performed in the GANGA FESTIVAL' at Hrishikesh with famed Playback and Ghazal songster Sri Hariharan. Cassette, RADHAR AVISHAR in Bengali from Gathani Records and HINDI NAZRUL GITI/ KHOLA MONE from the same have created a great sensation among music suckers.

Her music direction in the literal play RAJA WAZED ALI SHAH of the Chorus group and in A.R.I.B.B.A.S. and Welcome C.H.U.M.K.I. of Sarcarina Theatre bears extraordinary evidence of her originality and creative faculty. She has projected herself as a successful playback songster in Broja Buli of UTTAM KUMAR, INDUBALA (periodical) Music by KALYAN SEN BARAT, Music by Jatileswar Mukherjee and in Film A.G.N.I., GAYER MEYE SHOHORER BOU. She has directed to the admiration of all concerned, the opening song of 3rd SAF GAMES, 1987, Calcutta. MINI NATIONAL SCHOOL GAMES and festivity of 300 Times OF CALCUTTA CITY. She was fed with the S.I.R.N.A.M.A. award by BANGIYA CHALACHITRA PROCHAR SAMITY. She was nominated for the National Integration Award.
