Gareth Edwards is a British film producer, director, cinematographer, screenwriter, visual effects artist, and production designer. He is known for the direction of Godzilla (2014) and Monsters (2010). The latter film is an independent project in which he was involved as director, cinematographer, writer and visual effects artist. He was born in 1975. He has a Welsh Parentage. His father and mother are from Pontypool and Usk respectively. He did his schooling from Higham Lane School. Since he was a child, he was interested making films and “Star Wars” was one of the films that inspired him to become a film artist. In 1996, he graduated from University for the Creative Arts in Farnham with BA (Hons) degree in Film & Video. The institute was formerly known as Surrey Institute of Art & Design. In 2012, he went on to receive an honorary Master of Arts from University for the Creative Arts (UCA).

He began his journey as a visual effects expert and did shows like Perfect Disaster, Heroes and Villains and Nova. He did 250 visual effects for the middle one for which he earned international recognition. In 2008, he participated in the “Sci-Fi-London” 48-hour movie challenge. The gist was to create a film in just two days. He won the contest after which he directed and wrote his first feature film named Monsters. He made the special effects himself with the help of on-the-shelf tools. It got created with just seven members, two actors, and five crew members.

The project earned him enough respect and fame that he could get some big projects. He went to interviews arranged with art studios along with Legendary Pictures. In 2011, he got selected for the direction of 2014 release Godzilla. It was a film from big houses, Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. In 2014, with the announcement of first Star Wars stand-alone film, he got selected for directing it along with Gary Whitta. The film is expected to release in December 2016. In May 2016, he amicably parted with the studio and also chose to exit from Godzilla 2. He did it to work on small scale projects. He is a sponsor of ASSERT, a UK charity group. It raises awareness about Angelman syndrome, a rare genetic condition, with which his niece is suffering. He wants to contribute and raise funds for the organisation with his status.
