While Kassell was a student at NYU, she made short films including Jaime and The Green Hour. Jamie won her the female filmmaker prize as a student and in 2002 The Green Hour was screened at the Sundance Film Festival. Nicole won the Slamdance Screenplay Competition in 2004 for ‘’The Woodsman’’, her first feature film.

The film “The Woodsman” got nominated for many other awards like Independent Spirit Awards for the Best First Feature and British Independent Film Award (Best International Independent Film) and Gotham Independent Film Award (Breakthrough Director) in 2004.

Nicole was the runner-up at the Boston Society of Film Critics for Best New Filmmaker. At the London Film Festival (2004) the film also won The Satyajit Ray Award. The film was a screenplay based on a Steven Fechter’s play.
