Taylor Hackford is originally known as Taylor Edwin Hackford. He is a talented American movie director. He formerly was a president of the Director Guild of America. He also grabbed the Academy Award for the Best lie action short movie for “Teenage Father” in the year 1979.

Taylor directed notable films which are highly regarded namely, An Officer and a Gentleman in 1982, Ray in 2004; the latter brought him upto the list of Academy Award for the Best Director and Academy Award for Best Picture. He attended the University of Southern California for his graduation in 1968.

He was a pre-law major determined on international relations and economics. He did not want to pursue his career in law, he got a mailroom position at KCET-TV. There, he was an associate producer in ”Homewood” by Leon Russell in 1970. He also produced an hour long Bukowski based on the life of a poet called Charles Bukowski directed by Richard Davies. He said for The Idolmaker, he makes films about show business and works class people with an intention to bring out the people from the rung of society.

He also made Lou Gossett Jr. live separately during the shoot of An Officer and a Gentleman to intimidate his co-stars as a drill instructor. Richard gene wasn’t sure about the shooting the end scene. According to him, the scene was too sentimental. Hackford initially agreed with Gere until during rehearsal when extras playing the workers began to cry and cheer. Gere got convinced after watching the scene with music and said it got him chills up the back of his neck.

In an interview, Taylor confirmed that he never watched his movies. When he finishes his films he keeps them aside. He never went to film school and worked at KCET television station in L.A. he has done a lot of music too. He has directed many music videos like, “Against All Odds” by Phil Collins. Taylor was elected as President of the Director Guild of America in 2009. He was re-elected on June 25, 2011, for a two-year term at the National Biennial Convention, DGA, in Los Angeles.

Taylor has been married three times. He first got married to Georgie Lowres in 1967, they have on a kid, Rio Hackford. They got divorced in 1972. Taylor married his second wife in 1977, Lynne Littman and Taylor have one child, Alexander Hackford. The couple got separated in 1987.
