Tom Hooper's full name is Thomas George Tom Hooper. He is a famous British movie and TV director of Australian and English background. He was born in London. He is the son of Richard Hooper and Meredith Jean. He completed his education at Highgate School, a British day-only independent school in London, and Westminster School, an independent school within the precincts of Westminster Abbey, England. When he was 12 years old, he read a book titled How to Make Film and Television, after which he decided that he will pursue direction as his career. He made many short films starting from the age of 13. His film titled Bomber Jacket was a runner-up in the younger filmmakers' competition of BBC when he was 14 years old. After finishing his school at the age of 16, he started writing the script for the short film named Painted Faces.

He took a gap to raise finance for the film Painted Faces. He started reading English at the University College in Oxford. Tom then took admission in the Oxford University Dramatic Society. He directed advertisements along with the direction of television series and film projects. He joined John S. Clarke Productions, a commercial production company. He later signed an agreement with Infinity Productions in the year 2001.

He was the director of several episodes of EastEnders between the years 1998 and 2000. In 1999, he directed Cold Feet's two episodes. It was a comedy drama of Granada Television. This made him shift to bigger-budget production movies. He made his debut in feature film with Red Dust in the year 2004. He was again the director of Helen Mirren in the Elizabeth I, a historical drama film of HBO Films in the year 2005. He continued to work on the film named Longford for HBO in the year 2006, John Adams in the year 2008, which is a serial of seven parts based on the American president's life.

He came back to features in the year 2009 with The Damned United. In the next year, the film named The King's Speech was released.
