Chris Sarandon is internationally recognized as a versatile actor. He is the son of Cliffie and Christopher Sarandon Sr. His father’s original surname was Sarondonethes, and he is of Greek ancestry, while his mother was born of Greek immigrants. Chris was born and raised in Beckley, West Virginia. After graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School, he pursued a degree in the performing arts. He did so from the West Virginia University. For further studies, he went to the Catholic University of America and got a master’s degree in theatre.
It was during this time, that Chris met Susan Tomalin, who later went on to become
Susan Sarandon. They both decided to pursue their careers in acting after their graduation was complete. Susan adopted Chris’s last name and took it up as her professional name. His first move in order to kick-start a career in acting was to join the regional theatre where he made his professional debut in the year 1996. After his divorce, he moved to
New York and Sarandon started acting in his first major television role on the show The Guiding Light, which ran on the television for a year.
Then came the most highlighted role of his career, that of a transsexual wife in the movie Dog Day Afternoon. The portrayal of the gender-confused woman earned him much recognition and acclaim from fans and critics alike. He received nominations at the Golden Globes Awards for the Best New Male Star of the Year, as well as the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Sarandon has some Broadway work to his credit too. He acted in The Rothschilds and The Two Gentlemen of Verona.
He had a great penchant for the classics, which is evident in the way he acquired the role of Sydney Carton in A Tale of Two Cities. He also appeared in horror films wherein he came to be recognized as a villain, in movies like ‘
Lipstick’ and The Sentinel. Later, he took on different types of roles to show his versatility. He acted in The Day Christ Died in the lead role. He was applauded for his performances in The Osterman Weekend and ‘Protocol’. He even gained popularity among the teens after he acted in the teen horror movie
Fright Night, where he played a vampire.
Sarandon gained worldwide popularity after he depicted the role of Prince Humperdinck in The Princess Bride. Even though, his role in Dog Day Afternoon earned him award nominations, it was this role that he is best known for. He was well-recognized as Detective Mike Norris as well. This was a supporting character in the movie, Child’s Play. Another one of his most famous endeavours is that of the character Jack Skellington from ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’.
He even reprised the role for Halloween Screams and the Haunted Mansion Holiday at Disneyland. This made him hugely popular among the younger generations as well. Sarandon made a return to television by starring in the medical drama series ‘ER’ where he played the character of Dr. Burke. After performing on Broadway again with Joanna Gleason, he married her in 1994, and they have been together ever since. They have even starred together in multiple numbers of films.
He continued his work on television by appearing in numerous TV series. Those shows included The Necromancer, where he played a demon, ‘Charmed’, and Judging Amy where his character was that of a Supreme Court judge. In 2006, he yet again started work on the Broadway stage. He acted as Signor Naccarelli in the musical adaptation of The Light in the Piazza.
