He was married to actress Susan Baptist in 1967 but divorced in 1969. Later, he married South African TV-actress Sandi Schultz in 1993. He has a daughter, Jennifer Youngs who is also a famous actress as well as singer and a son Lachlan Youngs, a ceramic artist from his first marriage. He is not only a renowned actor but also a composer, producer and a well-known production manager in the American Film industry. His rough and blonde look, sensitive acting, versatile performance helped him to gain fame. John attended the American Academy of Performing Arts at the age of 17 to learn to act, where he refined his acting passion.

During those days, he organized the Manhattan's Children's Theatre Group, which aimed at empowering and encouraging the Performing Arts by public performances. After the graduation, he debuted in the chorus of "Fiddler on the Roof" and ended up by portraying the role of the sons as the actual one fell sick. Production managers, Ruby Altobelli and Stewart Cohen recognized his talent and gave him the opportunity to work in movies. He rose to fame in 1972-1975 by working in some films and a TV show. He also did the plays "Dance on a Country Grave" and "One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest" for three years. He won the Drama Circle Award for the latter one.

Then he worked for Ulu Grosbard directed "American Buffalo" as Bobby. On the sets of this movie, his co-star Robert Duvall met Young's sister Gail and later married her. He marked his international glory with the Oscar-winning movie "The Deer Hunter" released in 1978. It won Best Picture Award in 1979 in Oscars. The film is still as impactful as it was earlier. John then worked in Milos-directed "Hair" (1979) and Wambaugh-directed "The Onion Field" in the same year as the lead actor. John was listed as one of the "Promising Actors of 1979" In John Willis' Screen World, Vol. 31.

He portrayed a suicide survivor in Richard's "Inside Moves" in 1980 delivering and inspiring people how to overcome it. He appeared in "Salvador" in 1986, "The Godfather: Part III" in 1990. Youngs dedicated six years of life (1988-1994) for the anti-Apartheid movement along with Nelson Mandela in South Africa. He lent his voice to the title track of "This Town" album released on 18 February 2008. Every actor has to go through some bad phases of life. Same happened to John when he lost his best friend on 4th May shootings at the Kent State University.
