At the age of 13, she shifted to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting along with her family. During the start of her career, she appeared in many television series. In 2000, she served as a vocalist on the song Between Me and You by Ja Rule. In 2001, she sang the song Play. Along with her, the song featured Jennifer Lopez. In the same year, she released her first solo album Down with Me. The two songs When You Look at Me and AM to PM were the Chartbusters. The song Get Away was shot in Paris. The album received a mixed response from the critics. In 2004 she came up with her second album, It's About Time. The song Dip It Low was the most hit songs and even changed her image in the industry. The song earned the 5th position on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. She revealed a sexier side of hers, which was way different from her appearance in the album song AM to PM. The music style and the sound were appreciated with by many critics and were even compared to famous pop singers like Jennifer Lopez and Beyoncé.

She received a nomination for the Grammy Award in the category of Best Contemporary R&B Album. She released her third album So Amazin' in 2006. The lead single of the album was Say I along with rapper Young Jeezy. Like her other two even this was appreciated, and nearly 54,000 copies were sold in the first week. The album ranked at the 55th position on the Swiss Albums Chart. She has also been a part of various movies and television series. In 2007, she was seen in the 2007 television movie Snowglobe.
