Hao Lei is a Chinese Actress and Singer. She is famous for her roles in Summer Palace (2006), The Fourth Portrait (2010), Mystery (2-012) and Dearest (2014). Lei also appeared in popular TV series Sound of Colors (2006). Lei was born on November 1, 1978 in Tonghua city of Jilin, province in China. She was quite passionate about films from a very young age. After completing 12th from a local school, she attended the Shanghai Theatre Academy to study Drama. After that, she starred was in Liao Yimei’s play Rhinoceros in Love that premiered in Seoul, Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen in 2003.

Her acting skills caught the attention of legendary filmmaker Lou Ye and he cast her in Summer Palace in a leading role. The 2006 film became the turning point of her character. Set on the backdrop of Tiananmen Square Protests of 1989, the film garnered critical acclaim throughout the world. Lei’s acting received particular praise. However, the film got banned in mainland China for its nudity and controversial subject matter. Summer Palace was the first film of China to depict frontal nudity of both male and female protagonists. Meanwhile, she appeared in TRP-topping TV Series Sound of Colors as the female lead and was appraised. In 2009, Lei starred in period drama film Empire of Silver that became a big hit at the box-office.

Next year, she won the Golden Horse award for Best Supporting Actress for a drama, The Fourth Portrait. Lei’s portrayal as a single estranged mother of an orphan received a huge applause from the critics. She again received a nomination for Best Actress for her 2012 thriller, Mystery. She eventually won China Film Director’s Guild Award for Best Actress for the film. Lei appeared in 2013 period drama film The Golden Era, and her portrayal of writer Ding Ling won her Best Actress at the Youth Film Handbook awards.

In 2014, she starred in romantic drama Dearest. Her acting garnered applause and won her the Best Supporting Actress Award at the Chinese Film Media Award. Her recent films include MBA Partners (2016) and Kill Time (2016). Lei is also a prominent singer. Her studio album named Sad Things About TA released in June 2011. Lei mostly covers Mandopop and Alternative sounds in her songs. Her songs also featured in many of her movies, including Summer Palace.
