Lupita Amondi Nyong’o was the child of to Peter and Dorothy Nyong’o and was raised in Kenya. Her father who was a senator worked as a visiting professor in political science in Mexico City, Mexico. She was sent to Mexico at the age of 16 to learn the language Spanish. She studied Film Studies at the Hampshire College, located in Massachusetts and graduated from the Yale School of Drama’s acting class.

She received an Oscar for the same for the category of the Best Supporting Actress and also became the first Kenyan actress to win the Academy Award. She also worked in MTV’s series ‘Shuga’ in 2009 and ‘Non-stop’ in 2014. In 2014, she made a comeback to stage with a performance in Danai Gurira’s play ‘Eclipsed’. The play depicts the time of the Second Liberian Civil War, when the rebel officer’s band’s wives formed a team until their balanced life is thrown off-track when a girl, whose role was acted by Lupita, arrives.

It became the fastest selling new production and was premiered on the Broadway at the John Golden Theatre in the following year. This performance won her the Outstanding Broadway or Off-Broadway Debut Performance Award, an Outer Critics Circle Award, a Drama League Award and a Tony Award nomination. She also started a campaign called “hearts and minds” with ‘Wildaid’ to raise awareness for ivory burn and threat to the lives of elephants and rhinoceros.
