Tomei was a trial lawyer and her mother Patricia Adelaide is an English teacher. Both of her parents were Italian. So the Italian pronunciation of her name is Mari: Za to’mei. The ancestors of her father were from Tuscany, Calabria, and Campania whereas the ancestors of her mother were from Tuscany and Sicily. Her brother, Adam Tomei is also an actor and co-starred with Marisa in one of her movies. Marisa and her brother have spent some of their childhood with their paternal grandparents.

She brought up in Midwood, which is a neighborhood to Brooklyn. Her schooling was at the Andries Hudde Junior High School from where she qualified her degree of graduation in 1982.
