Her mother’s name was Marjorie and her father, George Tyler Moore, was a clerk. They lived in Flushing, Queens. When Mary was eight years old, they moved to Los Angeles. She did her schooling from Saint Rose of Lima in Brooklyn, Saint Ambrose School in Los Angeles and Immaculate Heart High School in Los Feliz, California. In 1955, Mary married Richard Carleton Meeker. They have a child named Richard Jr. born on 3rd July 1956. The couple divorced in the year 1961. In 1962, she married Grant Tinker, a CBS executive, and they got separated in 1981. Mary married Robert Levine on 23rd November 1983. At the age of 17, Mary decided to become a dancer. She made her first appearance on television in TV commercials as ‘Happy Hotpoint’, a tiny pixie dancing on Hotpoint appliances during the 1950’s series ‘Ozzie and Harriet’. She appeared in 39 Hotpoint TV commercials. She also featured on covers of numerous albums.

Mary first appeared in the TV series Richard Diamond, Private Detective; only her voice was heard, and her legs appeared during the show to create the character’s mystique. She played the role of a glamorous and mysterious telephone receptionist. She made a guest appearance on the shows like ‘Johnny Staccato’, ‘Bachelor Father’ and in two episodes of ‘Overland Trail’. Further, she appeared in the TV shows and films like ‘Bourbon Street Beat’, ‘Wanted: Dead or Alive’, ‘Hawaiian Eye’ and a few more. The year 1961 turned out to be a turning point in the career of Moore; Carl Reiner cast her in ‘The Dick Van Dyke Show’. The show was based on career and life as a writer of Reiner. Danny Thomas’s company was the producer of the show. Mary played the role of wife, Laura Petrie, of Van Dyke’s character. She won an Emmy Award for her performance in the show. In the year 1970, Mary and her husband Grant Tinker initiated a sitcom ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show’. The show portrayed the independent working life of a woman.

In 1969, Mary co-founded MTM Enterprises with her husband, Grant Tinker.
