Olivia Colman, whose birth name is Sarah Caroline Olivia Colman, was born on 30 January 1974, in Norwich, Norfolk, England, United Kingdom. She is a British actress, who gained wide popularity for her role as Sophie Chapman in the comedy series Peep Show (2003-2015) on Channel 4. She is particularly known for the performance in the movies Tyrannosaur (2011), Locke (2013), Hot Fuzz (2007), The Lobster (2015) and her role as Carol Thatcher in The Iron Lady Click to look into! >> Read More... (2011). Olivia Colman was born to a nurse mother and a chartered surveyor father. She realized that acting was what she wanted to do after her first act as Jean Brodie in a school play, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, at the age of 16. Initially, she attended Homerton College in Cambridge and spent a semester preparing to be a teacher.

It was here, at the age of 20, that she auditioned for the theater club thinking that it was the drama club and also ended up joining. She joined the Bristol Old Vic theater school to continue her training and launched herself into comedy, for which she had a true calling. She has won numerous awards for her amazing works in the film industry and on television. Olivia Colman won a Sundance Film Festival World Cinema Special Jury Prize for Breakout Performances for her role in the film Tyrannosaur, in January 2011. It was a special recognition for her when she won two awards at the 2013 BAFTA's, both as the Best Supporting Actress for her role in the movie The Accused and the Best Female Comedy Performance in Twenty Twelve. She received awards for the Best Leading Actress at the BAFTA's 2014, Broadcasting Press Guild, Crime Thriller Awards, and Royal Television Society for her character Ellie Miller in the ITV program, Broadchurch. She has also been nominated for various other awards for the same character. Colman is involved in charitable work and has been a human rights activist. She has voiced her opinion on various issues such as educating young people on how to prevent sexual abuse, domestic violence, Alzheimer's, mental health, etc. In 2014, she performed a radio documentary on behalf of Amnesty International for BBC, on the plight of women in Afghanistan. She reached a wide audience through this documentary which read out stories spoken by Afghan women who were too afraid to risk appearing publicly.
