Polly Holliday

Polly Holliday took birth on July 2, 1937 in Jasper, Alabama. Polly Holliday is a successful stage, movie, and theatre artist. 

Polly always aspired to become an actress. Her parents were separated when she was very young and she grew up with her mother. However, she lived with her father once in a week. She used to travel with him a lot during this time and got to observe waitresses. Little did she know that time that this would take her destiny to a different level.

Polly studied in Alabama State Women’s College during 1955 and did outstanding work in theatre. She also has a degree in piano to her credit. Besides, she has a Masters degree in music and also shared her knowledge in some public schools. Asolo Theater in Sarasota was a place that nurtured her acting talent; she essayed different roles ranging from Shakespeare to current generation’s works.

She took up supporting roles here. However, she was noticed in 1974 when she got herself associated with All Over Town, an off-Broadway venture. Though the role was minimal, it left an impression. And then came the real breakthrough in Polly’s career. The television series entitled Alice, wherein she played the character of Flo, a gritty waitress, is one of her best-known works and catapulted her to fame. The phrase in the series “Kiss my Grits” has made a big impression in the minds of the people. For this evergreen role of hers, Polly received the Golden Globe Awards a couple of times. 

During 1980, Polly left Alice and started her own show, Flo. She also involved in penning and producing this show. However, this show was not a success. 

Polly could not get the same stardom as she got for Alice, during the 80s and 90s. However, she continued to work in various famous television series. She also gave several stage performances. During 1985, she awarded the $1,000 Scholarship Award under her name for an eligible high school performer in the South East. This was given by the Southeastern Theatre Conference. 

Polly was active in the industry for more than three decades. During the 1970s, she was in the zenith of her fame. Polly entered the Alabama Hall of Fame for Stage and Screen performers during  2000.
