The gorgeous American actress and a director, Sally Margaret Field was born on 6th November 1946 in Pasadena, California. She was born to the actress Margaret Field and an Army officer, Richard Dryden Field. It was in 1950 her parents divorced, and Margaret married Jock Mahoney, a stuntman. Margaret spent her childhood at Portola Middle School and Birmingham High School where she did cheerleading. She did her debut in a TV sitcom Gidget (1965-66) where she played the part of a surfer girl alongside Pete Duel followed by The Flying Nun by ABC where Field was Sister Bertrille. Sally Field is an actress-cum-director. She was born on 6 November, 1946, in Pasadena (California), to actress Margaret Field. Her father was an army man, whom her mother divorced in 1950. She went to Portola Middle School, as well as Birmingham High School in Van Nuys. Owing to her mother and her step-father Jock Mahoney’s rocky relationship, she had to immerse herself in school activities. She was a cheerleader and also a member of the drama society. After completing her schooling, she underwent some professional training at an acting workshop conducted at Columbia Studios.

Sally kick started her career with a gig on the American sitcom ‘Gidget’, in 1965. However, her character of Sister Bertrille on ABC’s ‘The Flying Nun’ made her a victim of typecasting and a tough time followed for her finding diverse roles. In 1975, she underwent further training in acting at the Actor’s Studio, and she was mentored by Lee Strasberg. Later, in the 1976 hit drama film ‘Sybil’, she played a woman having multiple personality disorder. This breakthrough role not only ended her time being typecast but also won her an Emmy Award. In 1979, she played the lead role in ‘Norma Rae’ and was awarded at the Cannes Film Festival. She received her first Academy Award as well for this movie. Her next notable work was seen in the 1984 film titled “Places in the Heart”. She played the lead role of Edna Spalding and received an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, a Silver Bear. Apart from films, she has also been awarded an Emmy, each for her recurring roles in the television series ‘ER’, ‘A Woman of Independent Means’, ‘A Cooler Climate’ and ‘Brothers and Sisters’.

Sally took to directing in 1996 when she directed The Christmas Tree, a telefilm starring Julie Harris. Next, she directed ‘Beautiful’, a film based on the sacrifices and compromises made by pageant contestants.

Sally has been much of an activist in real life. Owing to her being afflicted with osteoporosis, she ran the "Rally with Sally for Bone Health" campaign to spread awareness for the same. She is a Democrat and has co-hosted the Global Leadership Awards, six times. She is an ardent activist for women’s rights and has been a member of the board of directors of the Vital Voices Global Partnership.

Sally has two sons from her first marriage with Steven Craig, which culminated in a divorce after seven years in 1975. She was known to have been in a relationship with actor and the then co-star Burt Reynolds from the late 1970s. However, after breaking up with him, she tied the knot with Alan Greisman in 1984. This marriage too ended in divorce in 1993. She begot a son with Alan named Sam, who is gay. Being the modern mom, she is a gay rights’ activist as well, and in 2012, she was awarded the Human Rights Campaign's Ally for Equality Award.
