Herbert Arthur Wiglev Clamor Grönemeyer, aka Herbert Grönemeyer, is a notable actor and rock singer. Although Herbert was born in Göttingen, a town in Lower Saxony in Germany on 12- April-1956 he was born and brought up in Bochum and spent most of his life there. Herbert’s mother suffered from a weird condition, and she used to collapse when she was expecting Herbert. She used to collapse every time she moved to her left, but nobody trusted her. Herbert showed interest in the field of music when he was learning to play piano at the age of eight.

His training in playing piano turned out to be useful when he got the job of a composer and pianist at Schauspielhaus Bochum, a well-known theater in Germany. Herbert then played the character of Lorenzo in the play, The Merchant of Venice, at an amphitheater in Cologne, Germany. The theater company offered him this role because of his musical abilities. Herbert never attended any professional acting classes or workshops. It just happened by chance, and soon he landed roles in various telemovies.

His first telemovie was Die Geisel (1977) in which he portrayed Freiwilliger. After that, he continued to star in a few more movies including Von Tag Zu Tag, Daheim unter Fremden and Die ewigen Gefühle. Herbert rose to prominence with Wolfgang Peterson’s film, Das Boot (1981). This movie narrated the story of the war that broke out in Germany and Herbert played Lieutenant Werner. His character in this movie received positive reviews, and he became a common name in the household of Germany. He also acted in a mini-series, Väter and Söhne- Eine Deutsche Tragödie (1986).

Herbert made brief appearances in the American films like Control and The American Man. Coming to his musical career, Herbert worked with the artist, Jens-Peter Ostendorf for the album Ocean Orchestra, which they released in the year 1978. His next albums were Grönemeyer (1979), Zwo (1981), Gemischte Gefühle and Total Egal did not do great business and were not appreciated at all. Herbert’s music career rose to the pinnacle of fame with the album, 4630 Bochum (1984). After this album, Herbert tasted success more than anything and published more albums like Sprünge, Luxus, Ö and Bleibt Alles Enders. Herbert was the first musician who got the offer to perform at an unplugged concert by MTV in the year 1994.

In 1998, he migrated to London and established his record label which he named Grönland. Herbert’s brother, Wilhelm and his wife, Anna Henkel-Grönmeyer both lost their battle to cancer in the year 1998. In 2000, Herbert’s album, Mensch hit the stores and received Platinum award for this hit album. Herbert has sung songs for the events such as Olympic Games and FIFA World Cup in the year 2004 and 2006 respectively.

He has performed at several prestigious events including the RUHR.2010 and has also done various tours which saw an attendance of million people. Herbert’s last album was Dauernd Jetzt (2014) for which he received numerous awards including the Best National Music Award and Echo Award. Herbert has two children- Felix and Marie. He also received the tag of European Hero given by Times magazine in 2000.
