Laura Lane Welsh Bush was born on November 4th, 1946 in Midland, Texas to Harold Bruce Welch and Jenna Louise Hawkins Welch. Her Father, Harold Bruce Welch, maintained a real estate business where his wife and Laura Bush’s mother, Jenna Louise Hawkins Welch, worked as a bookkeeper. Laura Bush was an only child, though she mentions in her book, “Spoken from the Heart” that her siblings died in childhood. In her youth, her father, a war veteran, vowed to give up arms when he returned from war. Instead, he drank and gambled. Laura mentions, in her book, that it was a “West Texas thing,” explaining that people hailing from the place were “risk takers.” For most of her youth, she lived a normal life.

An incident that is, however, significant in Bush’s life was a car accident in 1963 when seventeen-year-old Laura Bush ignored a “stop” sign and crashed into a car driven by her friend, Mike Douglas, who died. She claims that this tragic incident caused her to suffer years of guilt. She almost lost her religious faith. From 1961 to 1964, Laura Bush went to a Robert E. Lee High School in her town. In the year 1968, she graduated from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas with a degree in Elementary Education and then took up the post of an elementary school teacher at Kennedy Elementary School in Houston. She graduated from University of Texas at Austin in the year 1972 with a Master’s degree in Library Science after which she took up the post of Librarian at an elementary school in Austin.

In 1977, she met George W. Bush at a friend’s Barbecue. On their first date, they played miniature golf. A few months later, on November 5th, a day after her birthday, Laura Bush married George Bush at Glass Memorial Chapel in Midland, Texas. Before agreeing to the marriage, she laid the condition that she would never make a speech for any of George W. Bush’s political campaigns. On November 25th, 1981, Bush gave birth to twins, Barbara Bush and Jenna Bush. Laura Bush remains the first “First Lady” to give birth to twins. In 1995, George Bush became Governor of Texas and Laura Bush, the First Lady of Texas. She rose to the limelight. She made speeches with confidence and worked hard to promote literacy and breast cancer awareness.

She raised a million dollars for the state’s public libraries. In the year 2000, George Bush ran for President and Laura Bush supported him by participating in his campaigns and making speeches for him. In 2001, Bush was elected President and Laura Bush became the First Lady. As First Lady of the US, Laura supported many of her husband’s agendas. She promoted his “No Child Left Behind Act,” which was an educational reform which was historical. Bush, being an avid reader herself, staunchly championed the NCLB’s Reading First program, the largest reading initiate for children in the history of America. “Ready to Read, Ready to Learn” was a program she launched, which ensured that all young children were prepared for academics when they first started school and that the teachers were well-trained and qualified.

She then founded the National Book Festival to create a platform for book lovers to meet their favorite authors. In 2003, Laura Bush introduced her education agenda to the rest of the world, being the ambassador for the United Nations Literacy Decade. She worked with the UN to promote global literacy. In 2006, Bush invited world leaders to the first White House Conference on Global Literacy. She has visited schools in Afghanistan and other such nations to promote education for young girls. Laura Bush acted as leader of the Helping America’s Youth initiative, striking a partnership with 10 Federal agencies to reach the President’s goal, to address the needs of the youth. She served as the honorary chair of the US-Afghan Women’s Council and has traveled to Afghanistan many times. She has been outspoken about her disapproval of the Taliban’s treatment towards women.

In 2008, after Cyclone Nargis caused havoc in Burma, she urged countries all over the world to send aid to Burma. She supported the cause of human rights in Burma, bringing global attention to the plight of the ruling people. She has traveled to Africa multiple times in support of her husband’s Malaria initiative and emergency AIDS relief program. In 2006, she co-hosted the first White House Summit on Malaria, raising awareness of malaria and finding solutions to eradicate the disease. Laura Bush helped raise awareness about women’s risk for heart disease – the #1 reason for deaths among women in the US. She also helped launch a partnership between the US and the Middle East for awareness and research on Breast Cancer. Laura Bush now lives in Dallas with her husband, George W. Bush, their pet cats Bob and Bernadette, and their pet dog, Freddy.
