Fred Ward is an American model, actor, and producer. He was born as Freddie Joe Ward in San Diego City, California. He is a descendant from Scottish- Irish Cherokee. In his teens, he was recruited in the United States Air Force. He spent three years there. At the age of 21, he decided to choose acting as his career. He funded for his education by doing odd jobs such as a custodian, short-order cook and as a lumberjack. He was also a boxer and had broken his nose four times. After his education at the studio, he moved to San Francisco and started working at an experimental theater. Since acting couldn’t support his livelihood, he took up the job of a construction rigger. In Europe and North Africa, he performed in mime, Masque theater, and cabarets.

Then, he moved to Rome where he dubbed Italian movies into English (spaghetti westerns into English). He next made his debut in two films of Roberto Rossellini. He came back to San Francisco and appeared in Angel City, and Inacoma (stage production by Sam Shepard). His other stage performances were The Glass Menagerie, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. His foremost appearance on the big screen was with the movie Hearts of the West, in which he played the role of a cowboy.

He landed a major role in the film Escape from Alcatraz by Don Siegel in 1979. In Southern Comfort (1981), he played the character of National Guardsman. His next performances were seen in Timerider: The Adventure of Lyle Swann (1982), The Incredible Hulk (1979), Carny (1980), Cardiac Arrest (1980), Belle Starr (1980), Silkwood (1983), Uncommon Valor, and The Right Stuff(1983). He gained critical attention in Philip Kaufman’s, The Right Stuff for the portrayal of a doomed astronaut Gus Grissom. Subsequently, he worked in numerous TV shows and movies.

Fred was formerly married to Silvia Ward, and the duo had a son Django Ward. After their divorce, Fred married Marie – France Boisselle in the year 1995. Marie filed for the divorce in August 2013, but the couple resolved their differences and reunited later that year. Fred Ward has won Special Volpi Cup, Golden Globe Award, and was nominated for Cable ACE Award and Video Premiere Award.
