John Wells is an American producer, filmmaker, director and a writer. Wells is best known for being the whole and soul of the ER television series The West Wing, Southland, Third Watch and the Shameless. Wells is the owner of the production company named John Wells Productions.

The company is currently based at Warner Bros. Studios, California. Wells was elected as the president of the Writers Guild of America in the year 2009. Wells was born on 18th May 1956 in Alexandria, Virginia. His father, Llewellyn Wallace Wells was an Episcopalian minister. After completing his high school studies, Wells went to the Carnegie Mellon University to complete in 1979 to pursue his undergraduate studies in Drama from the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama. He was one of the actors who started working in city theatres very early. Wells started his career in the film industry in the year 1987, as a director of the movie Nice Girls Don’t Explode. The movie was an average hit and didn’t receive much appreciation from either the critics or the viewers.

In the year 1988, he wrote his episode for the CBS Summer Playhouse named Roughhouse. Later in the same year, Wells was hired as the producer of the ABD series entitled China Beach, created by William Broyles Jr. and John Scarlet Young. Wells even wrote the first five episodes of the first season of the series. He became the supervising producer of the third season of China Beach. He again wrote three episodes for that season. For the fourth and the final season of the series, he was hired as the co-executive producer. He wrote ten episodes for that season including the season premiere.

Apart from the television series, Wells also made some Television movies. In the year 1992, wells produced two Television movies namely The Nightman and Angel Street. Both the movies were directed by Charles Haid. The Nightman was about a boy who moves into a hotel which is being run by his mother and daughter. The movie Angel Street was written and produced by Wells and also had a sequel. After making these successful television movies, Wells produced the NBC drama series named ER.

The show was based on works of the novelist Michael Crichton. After some time, Wells became the writer and the show runner of ER. The show was so successful that it was nominated for 23 Emmy Awards and won 8 awards in a single year. Wells won the Producers Guild of America Award for this show in 1994. Michael and Wells also received honorable mention at the Wise Owl Awards. Wells remained the executive producers for the first four season of the show.

He was hired as the head writer for the fifth season of the show and eventually became the show runner for the seventh and eighth season of the series. Wells also produced a show called Trinity based on the life of an Irish family living in Hell’s Kitchen. Wells is known for producing many films.
