Nathalal Drave was a well-known Gujarati language poet, storyteller, and translator. He was born on June 3, 1912, in Bhuwa village of Bhavnagar district, also known as Sadul Bhagat and Adhiro Bhagat. His father’s name was Bhanji Kanji Dave, his mother’s name was Kasturba, and his wife was Narmada. Nathalal completed his primary education at Kundala and higher education at Bhavnagar (B.A. 1934, major in English) and Vadodara (M.A. 1936, major in Gujarati). 

Nathalal served as a teacher, principal, and academician in education. He then retired as a Principal from Mangrol (1970) at Dist. B.T.C. He also edited the two monthly magazines, Saraswati (1953- 1956) and Jeevan Shikshana (1956-1957). He has also been the Minister of Bhavnagar Sahitya Sabha and the Chairman of Sahityabharati, Bhavnagar. Nathalal was considered an important storyteller and poet of the Anugandhi era. He wrote many poems, Piya Bin, Anurag, Jhanvi, and Kalindi, and his love and dedication towards the poetry world reflected. He made a significant contribution to enriching Gujarati poetry with his great sense of humor and a little bit of sarcasm, which he always liked. In his poems Halve Hate (upadrav:3, 1983) and Upadrav (1974; 1979). He even wrote Anandadhara (1989), a collection of the most beautiful verse translations of poet Tagore’s poems, Ravindra- Vaibhava (1986), Muktakasangraha Mukhwas(1983), a book of devotional verse.

Nathalal Drave was also a very skilled story writer, he made a collection of stories including Udto Manavi (1977), Mithi Hai Zindagi (1983), Bhadra (1945), and Navu Jivatar (1945). He also did the translation of many other books into different languages, some of them were Mudrarakshas (1956), a translation of a short story written by Hardayalusinh, Shri Arvind Yogadarshan (1942), a translation of an English book written by Nalinikanth Gupta, etc. He also edited the work of many great poets of that time, such as Hargobind. Nathalal also did the job of translating the plays with Mr. Ambani.

Nathalal’s work received several awards, some of them were Award by Sajni magazine, the Gujarat Government Award, First Prize by Hasahs Monthly to Upadrav, as the best comedy of the period 1978 to 1984, for the best verse translation of Ravindra-Vaibhava by Dr. Lakhani Suvarnachandrak, Gujarat State Award for the Best Anthology Jhanvi, Anurag, Mithi Hai Zindagi, awarded as the best story collection 1983 by Parekh Library, Visanagar, etc. Nathalal died on 25 December 1995 in Bhavnagar.
