Bansi's family moved to Kashmir during his childhood where he met a painter Shubho Tagore.

On his advice and inspiration, he moved to Calcutta to pursue his career in painting. Bansi almost spent his life in the City. After directing few Bengali Screenplays, he got a chance to work for the Movie The River as an art director released in the year 1951. Bansi learned Craft Designing from the production designer Eugene Lourie. During that movie shooting, he met Satyajit Ray, he is one of the key people for giving chances to Bansi as an Art Designer. After meeting Satyajit Joined in the group Calcutta Film Society. Some of the Best Designer movies under Ray and Bansi are Jalsaghar, Pather Panchali, and Charulata. The Cinema 36 Chowringhee Lane dedicated to Bansi. Chandragupta production designer works started from the year 1955 and lasted till 1980, and most of the works are did along with Sen and Ray.

Bansi Art Directing started from the year 1951 and end in the year 1984.
