It takes a lot of hard work and a great team to make a movie starting from the cast to the technical dept. When the story is narrated it is the duty of the cinematographer to bring as described on screen. It needs s lot of creativity to bring someone's thought into reality. Where Mumbai is a city of dreams, everyone comes with their ideas to make it real.

Mahendra Shetty is an Indian cinematographer who also stepped into the town with dreams to come true. He is a Mangalorean born and is the son of Late J.N Shetty who was a well-known dermatologist and Director of Father Muller Institute of Post Graduate Studies presently known as Father Muller Medical College. His brother Dr. Narendra J Shetty is a practicing dermatologist and Head of the Department of Dermatology of Medical Science, Mangalore. So it seems it was only he who is inclined towards the technical department. He has done his high School from Mangalore itself. After that, he studied Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from Chamarujendra Academy of Visual Arts (CAVA), Mysore where he got the chance of training himself under many reputed cinematographers. His first full-length movie was Superstar which did not do so well in the market.

But as said that talent doesn't hide. His next project Udaan was critically acclaimed and dragged him enough the limelight and won him the black lady or one of the prestigious award in the Bollywood industry, the Filmfare Award. He also got nominated for the screen Valley awards. His work was much appreciated for this movie. His next film was Lootera for which he received a nomination in Zee Cine Awards. Lootera is a beautiful periodic film. It is an adaptation of classic O Henry story. The story set in 1950 when a light wasn't there.

Motwane said that Mahendra J Shetty understood the plot of the story and so treated it as a period film which is being explained to him. He notes down everything and makes the work smoother. The movie was just perfect in its cinematography. And the finest quality about him is that he didn't make it look like monotonous periodic movies such as Parineeta and Devdas. The notable skills of cinematographer Mahendra J Shetty have won the film many critical acclamations. Apart from Lootera and Udaan, he showed his skills in the movies like Labor for Love, Tequila Nights and Superstar.
