Masaba Gupta is one of the most accredited and youngest fashion designers of India. She is the proud creator of the ‘Masaba for Satya Paul’ designer wear. Masaba was born to West Indies cricketing legend Vivian ‘Viv’ Richards and National Award recipient
Neena Gupta in the year 1989. She spent her childhood in the city of Mumbai and aspired to be a professional tennis player. She dropped her idea of pursuing tennis when she was 14 years old and decided to pursue music and dancing. She wanted to get enrolled in Shiamak Davar’s Institute of Performing Arts (SDIPA) and had undergone training from the master himself.
Her mother wasn’t very supportive of her decision and had suggested following something else as she hadn’t found a proper career in dancing. She later moved to London and had undergone a course in music but dropped the course midway and returned to India. In India, she tried to get herself into Radio Jockeying and Acting both which turned out to be unsuccessful. Afterwards, she had made up her mind and decided to join Shreemati Nathibhai Damodar Thackersey Women’s University (SNDT) in Mumbai. She had found a mentor in fashion designer
Wendell Rodricks and with him, she had received three awards for her designer collection at her graduation fashion show. Wendells had pushed her to showcase her collection at the GenNext part of Lakme Fashion Week, which took place in Mumbai in 2009. Her first collection named ‘Kattran’ which meant pieces of small fabric was Masaba’s collection that she showcased at the Lakme Fashion Week during her age was just 19. Her collection had won her the Most Promising Designer Award and later in 2010 won the Best Emerging Designer Award from Marie Claire and Cosmopolitan.
She had launched her ‘Masaba’ design by the year 2011. Currently, her designs are the favourites among stars such as
Shilpa Shetty and
Mandira Bedi. She was married to
Madhu Mantena on 9th March 2015.
