Anil Chatterjee was born on the 25th of October in 1929. He was born in Bengal. He is also known as Anil Chattopadhyay. He started his career in 1950, and it continued till 1990. Anil has acted in almost 150 movies, including Bengali as well as Hindi cinema. Anil is one of the most renowned and stable actors who can play different roles. There were times when he received negative roles to play as an antagonist. These were inappropriate for his career and led him to lose his respect among the audience and critics as well.

Apart from movies, he also got a chance to act in some of the television shows out of which the most important was the Naqab which telecasted on the National Doordarshan Network. With the first three directors he received more than one chance to act in their cinemas. One of his most notable performances in the movie Deshbandhu Chittaranjan obtained the name Deshbandhu which means a friend to the country. It was the autobiography of famous freedom fighter Chittaranjan Das who lived from 1870 to 1925. He got appreciation from Basanti Devi, who is Deshbandhu's wife. Anil Chatterjee completed his graduation from St Xavier's College, Kolkata.

After graduating, he started working with his college as a member of the office and as a society member. He completed his schooling from Delhi, and also qualified the Cambridge examination as a first rank holder. During his college days, he was associated with Utpal Dutta and did several dramas. He also took part in the election and became the member of the Legislative Assembly of West Bengal. He died on 17th March 1996 at the age of 66. Anil Chatterjee’s first movie was Nashik for which Ritwik Ghatak was the director. In 1958, Anil joined hands with Ritwik Ghatak for his next: Ajantrik.

For the first time in 1960, he signed an agreement with Satyajit Ray for the screenplay Devi. By the year 1961, he had started acting in Ritwik Ghatak's and Satyajit Ray's films. These included Komal Gandhar, Teen Kanya, Postmaster, and Kanchenjungha respectively. Kanchenjungha is a Bengali movie which is about the vacation resort of Kanchenjunga, located near Darjeeling. Anil also acted in Tapan Sinha's plays. His last screen show was Himghar in the year 1996.
