Aribam Syam Sharma

Aribam Syam Sharma was born on March 21st, 1936 at Imphal, Manipur. He started his career as a film director as well as a composer from the state of Manipur in India. He made his first appearance in The Manipuri movie Queen as an actor for the motion picture Matamgi Manipur. Besides acting, he directed his first show Lamja Parshuram in 1974. Lamja Parshuram movie was the first movie of the Manipuri films which runs for about a hundred days and made a box office hit in the industry. Later in 1980, he made his next talkie Olangthagee Wangmadasu.

This movie was another biggest success in the Manipuri films which made the drama to run for almost twenty-five weeks in the cinema industry. He continued his direction for further more films in income with the fourth film on his making that helped him to get fame internationally. Talkie obtains honor from Montgolfiere d'Or award in 1982 from the festivals of 3 continents namely Nantes. In 1991 at the Cannes Film Festival, one of his screenplays Ishanou(the chosen one) was screened in limited regard section which was taken in 1990.

In 2006, he received the honor of Padma Shri award. On May 14, 2015, he gained the Jewel of Manipuri cinema award from the film forum of Manipur slot development Society of the Manipur state film and he also received the golden mountain gold fare award in 1982 and achievement award for the year 2008. In 2009, he received a Kamal Kumari National award. Aribam also received the V.Shantaram lifetime award. Aribam started his filmography career in the year 1974, and it continued for more than 30 seasons as a director, producer, and music director.

In 2012, he made the movie Leipaklei which is the story of a woman whose name is the flower of Manipur. The movie first released at the film festival of Guwahati in the year 2012. It was also screened at international film festival of Kolkata for the year 18th as well as international film festival of Jeonju which occurs at South Korea Jeonju. The screenplay received the best Manipuri film of the 60th National Film Award which happens at 2013. Its story is about the sweet as well as the beta moment which occurs in the entire lifetime of a woman.

Apart from filmography, Sharma also involved in making the bibliography. In 2006, one of the Bibliography which was released is living Shadows, in 2014 it is Eshei Binodinigi, and Modern Manipuri Music and Me and 2016 it is Manipuri Cinema: Eigi Paodam bibliography movies.
