Divya Unny is an Indian actor, writer, director and former journalist. She was born and raised in Mumbai, Maharashtra where she graduated from the SIES College of Science, Arts and Commerce with a bachelor’s degree in mass media.

Post-graduation, she started working as a journalist for Zee News in their daily special “DNA,” following which she rose to the post of a news reporter for NDTV. In 2011, she joined Mid-Day Newspaper as its principal copy editor but quit her job later when she was later hired as the special correspondent at the People magazine.

Divya faced the camera as an actress for the first time when she played the supporting role of a reporter in Hansal Mehta’s biographic drama “ Aligarh Click to look into! >> Read More... ” (2015), starring Manoj Bajpayee Born on 23 April 1969, Manoj Bajpai is first a Bol >> Read More... .

The movie was efficacious as expected and presented Divya with a powerful start to her career.

In 2016, she appeared in the short film “Gul” and two feature films, “ Jugni Click to look into! >> Read More... ” and “ Traffic Click to look into! >> Read More... ” (Hindi remake of the Malayalam movie under the same name released in 2011; both versions were directed by Rajesh Pillai Rajesh Pillai is a Mollywood filmmaker who made hi >> Read More... ). She joined the #metoo movement in 2017, where she accused late Traffic filmmaker, Rajesh Pillai, of sexually abusing her.

She claimed that the director had called her into his hotel room at Thiruvananthapuram at 9 p.m. One night to talk about her prospects of being cast in the film (the 2011 Malayalam version). Instead, he had made sexual advances at her, telling her that ‘compromises’ needed to be made to get into the show business.

He threatened to ensure that she would not be working in the south film industry again if she refused. However, Divya did not budge to the director’s malevolence and left the room without accepting the role. She later played the role of the wife of Ramdas Godbole (played by Manoj Bajpayee) in the Hindi remake of the film.

She portrayed the character of a prostitute in her next project “Tikli and Laxmi Bomb” (2017), which explores the hardships of Indian prostitutes and builds a thrilling story of how two sex workers decide to subvert the patriarchy and establish a business ‘for women and by women.’ In 2017, Divya made her directorial debut with the short film “Her First Time” (2018), featuring Satyajit Sharma.

Clocking in at nine minutes, the film revolved around the story of an eleven-year-old girl who has her first menstrual period but since her mother, who is a gynecologist, is busy at the hospital delivering a child, she approaches her father with the issue.

The movie boldly presents menstruation for what it is, a natural phenomenon, and tries to lift all the ignorance surrounding it for what it is not, a taboo. The film won the Best Jury Award – Special Mention at the Washington D.C. South Asian Film Festival in 2017. In her latest project, Divya played Mrs. Iyer in Raj Kumar Gupta’s action-thriller “India’s Most Wanted” (2019).
