Omung Kumar Bhandula, better known as Omung Kumar, is one of the famous production designers and directors of the recent Indian film industry. He was born to Vipin Kumar Bhandula, a Punjabi, and Sabah, a Parsi, who were at FTII, along with Shatrughan Sinha, during the late 60s. Both of them were actors, whose dream of becoming big was fulfilled by their son. His father passed away when Omung was just 19 years old due to excessive alcohol consumption.

Omung Kumar, or ‘OK’, as known among his circle of friends, started his liking for this field right from when he was a kid. He has taken part in lots of inter-school competitions, winning different titles. He, as a child, has worked with Doordarshan in TV series like the ‘Magic Lamp’, as well as ‘Jack And The Beanstalk’. He took his degree in Commercial Arts from Bandra School of Arts, where he met Vanita, his wife.

His first professional step was with HTA, an advertising bureau, with whom he spent twelve years. Simultaneously, he had also been modeling for famous product brands like Ponds and Godrej. A meeting with Tarun Chopra turned out to be the change of course in his career as he got selected as the host for ‘Ek Minute’, one of the biggest game shows telecasted on Zee TV. Subsequently, he moved on to taking big screen works. OK started designing sets for various films including Jhankaar Beats (2003), directed by Sujoy Ghosh, Chameli, the national award winner ‘ Black’, released in 2005, starring the great Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukerji, ‘ Shabd’, ‘ Yuvvraaj’, and 'Saawariya’, in 2007, directed by the famous Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Omung has also done small roles in the superhit movies, ‘Na Tum Jaano Na Hum’, in the year 2002, and ‘Humko Ishq Ne Mara’, in the year 1997.

He has also worked for films like Waqt: The Race Against Time, directed by Vipul Amrutlal Shah and released in the year 2005, as well as the rom-com film, Pyaar Ke Side Effects, in the year 2006, which was directed by Saket Chowdhary.

Omung Kumar did his directional debut through the blockbuster hit movie ‘ Mary Kom’,in the year 2014, a film telling the hardships faced by Mary Kom, an Indian boxing champion. The role of Mary Kom is portrayed exceptionally well by the versatile actress, Priyanka Chopra. This film received many awards and nominations.

OK’s latest project is the film ‘ Sarbjit,’ which was released in May 2016. This biographical drama is pictured from Sarabjit’s sister, Dalbir’s perspective. The world beauty, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, played the role of Dalbir Kaur, and the actor, Randeep Hooda, as Sarabjit, who was an Indian national convicted in Pakistan.
