Sardul Singh Kwatra is a music and film director, who was born in 1928 in a Sikh family in Punjab in Pakistan. Apart from the Punjabi songs compositions, he also did Hindi song compositions. He is popular for his music composition of twenty-five Punjabi movies and half a dozen Hindi movies. Sardul learned the classical music in the initial days of his school from Sardar Avtar Singh of Lahore. His inspiration was Hans Raj Behl, whose music helped him to sharpen his skills. Talking about his love life, he was in love with a Muslim girl with which he composed tunes celebrating her feminity and charm. He even admitted that he can’t create good music without being in love. After partition, he along with his family moved to Amritsar but he didn’t make his translocation a barrier. He chose a young girl Shyama as the main lead and created music for music which became famous.

Sardul made his debut in the film industry as a music director from ‘Posti’, the Punjabi film, which released in 1950. The songs of Posti such as ‘Do Guttan Kar Mariyan’ and ‘Jaa bhairha Posti’ became super hit of the century. Later on, he composed music for the films like ‘Goonj,’ ‘ Mirza Mirza is a Bollywood film actor and model. Mirza w >> Read More... ,’ ‘Sahiban,’ etc. He finally got a chance to perform with one of the favorite actress-singer Suraiya in the movie ‘Goonj’. His music production, ‘Kaude Shah’ in 1953 became a blockbuster. His music compositions such as ‘Ajj Sohne Kapde te chunni,’ ‘Mere Sajnan Di Dadchi Badami Rang Di,’ and ‘Chhad de toon Mera dupatta’ also became super hit. Although some of the movies of the 1950s did not perform well, his musical compositions in those films smashed the Bollywood industry. He moved to Chandigarh in the 1970s and set up the Chandigarh Film Institute. In Chandigarh, he composed music for the Punjabi film Shaheed Udham Singh while his last composition was for the Punjabi movie ‘Ankheeli Mutiar’ in 1979. Finally, he moved to the US where he died in 2005 at the age of 77.
