Bhagwan Abhaji Pandav, renowned as Bhagwan Dada is an actor and director, has essayed many roles in Hindi movies in the era of silent movie and later in talkie movies. He was born in 1913, son of a mill worker. Before joining movies he worked as a laborer. He is known for his role in movie ‘ Albela’. Albela is a musical movie on social issue of dowry. He played the role of Pyarelal, acted along side Geeta Bali. Geeta Bali is an actress and singer. She has acted with many leading actors of her time and also sang many popular songs in movies. The song “Shola Jo Bhadke” from Albela became popular overnight. He made his debut with Criminal, and later on he turned director in 1938 and producer in 1942 with his Jagruti Pictures and Bhagwan Arts. He was known for directing many small budget movies, which he directed during 1938 to 1949. He did not have major success in the movies and had to settle for smaller roles in the later part of his career. He has essayed many roles with effortless ease as simpleton and comedian in many action, comedy and social movies. The major success he had as a director was a movie made in Tamil Vana Mohini. The Vana Mohini was made in 1941 and is a story about a prince and a tribal girl, which become a hit in Tamil movie industry. He introduced Anand Bakshi, a lyricist, who went on to become famous song writer in the industry through his movie ‘Bhala Admi’. He had an affluent life style and one of the richest actors of his time, and he had to sell all his property during financial difficulty. In later part of his life he lived in a Chawl in Dadar. He did whatever roles he could get in the later part of his life, the notable roles being in Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje and Chori Chori. He died of a massive heart attack in 2002, he was 89.
