Indra Bania

Indra Bania was born in Assam, India on 24 December, 1942. He was an actor, a theater artist, a playwright, and a renowned director. He completed his primary education from Assam and for his higher studies, he moved to Guwahati, in 1958. Bania was interested in becoming a stand-up artist. He debuted as a stand-up comedian, and used to perform at various events and shows across Assam. He has been in the industry since 1960 and has delivered some excellent performances throughout his career. Bania used to work as an RJ in All India Radio, Guwahati, and used to perform in theaters, being very popular in Assam and North-East India. People loved him and were captivated by him.

In 1970, Indra gained popularity when the play ‘Gobardhan Christ’, was premiered to the audience, in which Bania played the lead role. He was also the lead artist in ‘Molinar Sangbad’, a play by All India Radio. The first breakthrough performance delivered by Bania came in 1988 when he was selected to play the lead role in ‘Halodhia Choraye Baodhan Khai’. He played the role of Rameswar Bora, and the movie was directed by a well-known director, John Baria, who was very popular in Assam. The movie won several awards at Switzerland’s prestigious film festival and also grabbed the Best Actor Award to Indra Bania for his brilliant performance in the picture. Indra was nominated for Best Actor in the national film festival, but missed holding the Award. Bania’s journey has been an inspiration to many in 2007, as he played the character of a native of Assam, Machang Lalung, who was imprisoned by the government without any trial for 54 years, and had no clue as to why he was arrested. The documentary film bagged many awards and nomination at various film festivals, and its cinematography was highly acclaimed.

Indra Bania acted in various TV shows and in more than 40 movies, which include various Hindi and Assamese films like Srimati Mahimamoyee, ‘Apeksha’, ‘ Sendur Sendur is a compelling tale of love, sacrifice, st >> Read More... ’, ‘Puja’, ‘Suruj’, etc. He also directed the varied award winning movies. Indra Bania died at the age of 72 in Guwahati, Assam, in Hayat Hospital on 25 March, 2015 due to his prolongs illness and absurd health. He is remembered as an excellent actor and a director who created history with his four decades of dedication to the industry.
