Born to Mahabanoo Mody Kotwal, Kaizaad Kotwal is an Indian veteran actor, producer, director, writer, and designer. He was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India around 1969. Kotwal’s passion for theater began when he was 18. Genuinely inspired by the feminist Kamla Ramchandani’s “The Witness,” Kotwal adapted the script and directed his first play for a theater competition in high school which received high critical acclaim. The success of this play drew him towards a strong feminist theme, whose emphasis can be seen in his later works. Kaizaad Kotwal is a renowned name in Theatre cinema today. Having done more than 200 plays, his work on the American documentary drama “Once I was Young. Now I am Wonderful”, won him an Emmy Award in 1996 for art direction. He did his master’s in performing arts at The Ohio State University situated in Columbus, Ohio.

He later joined his alma mater as a professor and taught there for about 20 years. In 2007 he got the title of one of the top professors in Ohio and also won the Griffin Society Award for the best professor in 2008. In 2009, after coming back to India, he along with his mother directed and produced one of the most controversial and successful commercial play named, “The Vaginal Monologues,” an adaptation 0f American playwright Eve Ensler’s marvelous piece of art by the same name. It gained vast media coverage because of its bold disposition. The play’s controversial content was seen as an excuse to hold its release in some of the major cities in India. But today, their shows are running housefull. Similarly, his adaptation of John Pielmeier’s “Agnes of God,” called fro a ban from the various Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) and the Catholic Secular Forum (CSF).

The play’s story is based on a nun whose virginity was in question. Kotwal very strongly defended his adaptation.
