He was seen in the season 4 in the role of Aayan Ibrahim. Suraj was born in a Malayali family but was raised in New Delhi. His parents Gokul Churai worked as a software engineer from Kerala and his mother Shailaja works as an economist from Kerala itself. His family, though staying in a way different city from their usual kept up to the traditions of the Malayali culture. He has two other siblings. The family had no contact or any touch with the film industry. In 2012 along with his brother Suraj went to audition for the movie Life of Pi. He was auditioned for the lead role of Piscine Molitor. More than 3000 people had auditioned for the role. After various rounds and selections, he was selected for the title role. The director of the movie Ang Lee once in an interview said that he selected Suraj due to his innocent appearance and eyes.

He further said that he wanted someone who could convey the emotions on the screen as the movie was based on the emotions which have to felt by the audience. Suraj's average looks served as a plus point for the character. The movie also featured Tabu, Irrfan Khan, Adil Hussain, Gérard Depardieu and Rafe Spall in key roles. The film was released on a great platform and premiered at the 51st New York Film Festival. Life of Pi was not just critically acclaimed but also a commercially hit with a collection of 609 million. After the shooting of Life of Pi, he returned to Delhi and continued his studies in philosophy.

He continued at the St. Stephen's College. He wants to continue up a career in filming. In 2014 he appeared as a part of the television series Homeland. He was seen in the season 4 in the role of Aayan Ibrahim. In the same year, he appeared in Million Dollar Arm sports biopic, Rinku Singh. The movie was first shown at the Sundance Film Festival. He will now be appearing in Burn Your Maps in the character of Mongolian.
