Choiti Ghosh

Choiti Ghosh is an Indian puppeteer and an artist. She is a well-known object theatre artist in the country. Besides object art, she has been a part of various theatre forms. Choiti also got played a small role in the movie, Shahrukh Bola "Khoobsurat Hai Tu." She took birth in New Delhi on 28th March 1980. Her parents Ruma and Ashish Ghosh are theatre artists.

In the school, Choiti played ‘the little girl’ in Jaytra plays. She received theatre training from her parents and took part in stage skits. Later, she enrolled in Delhi University and got an English Literature Degree from St. Stephens. She studied Homer’s Odyssey in College which helped her to get a better point of view in theatre.

After her graduation, Choiti joined the Naya Theatre Group. She traveled to cities like Delhi, Bhopal, and Mumbai to perform. She performed in plays like Agra Bazaar, and during those days met Abhisar Bose, the love of her life. In 2002, she became a member of Katkatha Puppet Arts Trust. She got training in contemporary puppetry from Sushree Anurupa Roy.

Choiti did some plays with them and learned the art of puppetry. She also played the character of Tuki in Shonali Bose’s Amu. The Art group became a part of her life, and today she is an active member of the group. Later in 2010, Choiti went to France and did a course in object theatre from Institut International de la Marionnette. She trained under Agnes Limbos who guided her to break a story and portray its meaning through metaphors and symbols.

Choti struggled in the start at the Institute but later improved her set skills. In 2011, Choiti performed with her theatre group, Tram. Based on Homer’s Odyssey, it became her first object theatre performance. Later that year, she did her second theatre production named Birds’ Eye View. It was about a pigeon acting as a messenger in the times of war. In 2012, she won the Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar in puppetry.

Two years later in 2017, she directed and conceptualized a play based on the classic, Alice in Wonderland. Her most recent works are Museum Of Ordinary Objects and Outer Dilli. These works deviate from her other works as these plays influence young viewers. In 2016, Choiti got nominated for the Sangeet Natak Academy Award. Her group Tram is doing great in the field Object theatre.
