She was born fifth as Mumtaz Jehan in a family of 13 members, and when her father lost his job, she along with his father used to knock at every studio in Bombay to get a break in film. Her family faced a lot of hardships and even Madhubala’s three sisters, and two brothers died at the age of five and six. Hence, she had no other option but eventually become an actress.
Her father Ataullah Khan was an instrumental in Madhubala’s career and kept strict control over her. He even imposed 7 pm deadline for the actress to return home after shooting. Her father was also seen breaking a relationship with
Dilip Kumar. According to renowned Muslim clergy, she was destined to become rich, but died at a very young. She was totally under coma and bed-ridden for many years and died at an age of 36. Madhubala made her debut as a child artist and after the success of Mahal with
Ashok Kumar, she became the most-sought after actress in Hindi cinema.
Kamal Amrohi is a powerful name in Indian cinema for his excellent effort as director-writer for the classic ‘Mahal’. The film gave super stardom to Madhubala and even
Lata Mangeshkar (song "Aayega Aane Waala"). She could convincingly play a comedy, romantic and tragedy role with ease. She acted with all leading top actors like Dilip Kumar,
Raj Kapoor, Ashok Kumar,
Kishore Kumar and
Bharat Bhushan. Her initial releases were flops but ‘Mahal’ was a turning point in her career. This film ran for one year in a cinema house in Kolkata and was equally success in another territory including Pakistan. It is said Dilip Kumar fell in love with her on sets of their film ‘Tarana’ and even openly declared love for her in an open courtroom, but her father’s disapproval irked Dilip so much that he went to say that he would love Madhubala till she dies.
