Mallika Sherawat is a glamorous Model turned bold Bollywood actress turned Hollywood actress, who has acted in regional movies and Hindi movies before moving to the USA where she spends most of her time now. She was born on October 24th, 1976, as Reema Lamba in a small town called Moth, which is in the district of Hisar, State of Haryana, India. She was an Air India Air Hostess during her early twenties and before she has started acting in movies. She is a Scorpio with a strong influence of Libra according to her star sign. She is 169 cm (5’ 6.5”) tall. She was born in a philanthropically influential Jat family - Seth Chhaju Ram’s - being more famous than her in her native place. She took on the name Mallika (meaning The Empress) when she entered the movie field, since there were many similarly named actresses (as Reema). She also took her mother Santosh Sherawat’s maiden name, Sherawat, in great gratitude and respect, but only after many years her family reconciled with her, a traditional and orthodox family from deep Jat Land that was not much thrilled with her decision of entering the ShowBiz, at first or even after a long time. Her two Hollywood movies to date are, the 2010 “ Hisss” under Jennifer Chambers Lynch’s direction, and the 2011 “Politics of Love”, (another name in which it is referred to would be, “Love. Barack”), which was directed by William Dear. The movie “Hisss” was dubbed in many regional languages since then. She has also acted in an international film, a Chinese movie that was track-shifted to many other languages including English, “The Myth”, with Jackie Chan. According to her, Jackie Chan has been so benevolent to her and has helped her a lot to become famous in the international arena, and also had her stay with his own happily married family and home at Hong Kong for a while. She has also appeared in the Cannes Film Festival to promote this 2005 movie, wearing 45 million dollars worth of jewelry that Russell Mehta’s ‘Orra Diamonds’ have sponsored, and has received worldwide accolades. She has once disclosed that right from her childhood she would ape all the leading Bollywood artists expertly, especially the Madhuri Dixit dance number “Ek Dho Theen’, much to the chagrin of her traditional family. She had her primary schooling near her native place, at Nirvana, before her father, an Engineer working for the Haryana Government, had the family moved to New Delhi. She went to attend Mathura Road’s Delhi Public School, as a teenager, amidst a very strict family environment. After DPS, she went to Delhi University’s Miranda House to pursue her Bachelor of Philosophy degree. She was offered Modeling opportunities when she was still studying, and she had made good use of them. According to her, she ran away to Mumbai in 2002 to realize her dreams, as she just could not live under her over-strict father. Her mother and her younger brother Vikram loved her so much but her mother could not do anything against her father’s wish as she was from a very orthodox and traditional family, and in her own words, ‘was still wearing a ghunghat’. Mallika Sherawat has stated that, even now, only her brother Vikram has been encouraging her, and be with her in times of need, and helping her like a father would. At Mumbai, she had landed a job with Air India as Air Hostess, her beauty and structure and intelligence helping her a lot, and then her modeling career also bloomed. She was getting opportunities for TV commercials also, and her TV commercials would include Superstars Shah Rukh Khan (in the Santro Ad) and Amitabh Bachchan (in the BPL Ad). And finally, in 2002, a movie chance had landed on her lap, in the name, “Jeena Sirf Merre Liye”. She has appeared in a guest role in that movie, as the character, ‘ Seema’, and her original name Reema Lamba shown in the Credits. She later told the Media that her song-dance scene with Tusshar Kapoor in the movie was ruthlessly cut off and only she and Tusshar Kapoor’s family and probably Kareena have got the opportunity to see it. She was also appearing in TV and Video presentations at that times; notable amongst them being, Nirmal Pandey’s (the actor who came as ‘Vikram Mallah’ in the award winning movie, “ Bandit Queen”) “Maar Dala”, and Surjit Bindrakhia’s (the One breath -One note Punjabi Singer) “Lak Tunoo”. The next year, in 2003, she was cast in the Govind Menon’s remake of “ Love Story”, the raunchy and bold scenes-rich Bollywood movie, “Khwahish,” as the lead, ‘Lekha Khorzuvekar’, and the doors to big stardom of glamour and style suddenly have opened up for the bold and beautifully made, a die-cast for the typical Indian beauty, Mallika Sherawat. Her next movie came in 2004, “Murder” by Anurag Basu, preceded by another movie by name, “Kis Kis Ki Kismat” by Govind Menon which had her cast opposite to Dharmendra himself. Though nothing can be said about the latter, the former became a super-hit that went on to get her a nomination at the Zee Cine Awards in the Best Actress category. After the movie, “Murder”, there was no turning back for the very Indian-looking, dusky olive damsel. In 2008, she was nominated for the Indian award ‘Best Comedian’ at the Screen Awards for her role in “Maan Gaye Mughall-E-Azam”, and for the American award, ‘Renaissance Artist’ at the Annual Diversity Awards - 16th edition, and won the latter. Lately, in 2015, she was nominated for the Kalakar Awards - 23rd edition, in the category, ‘International Youth Icon’, and won it hands down. Notable among her TV Programs are “Sarabhai vs Sarabhai”, and “ Indian Idol”. The former is a comedy series about a Mumbai posh family. It was started on November 8th 2004 to end on March 10th 2006 by Hats Off Productions, and was telecast on Star Plus. The latter can be called as the Indian version of the famous Pop Idol. It has started on October 28th 2004 and has been running for 5 seasons, the latest being telecast on Sony TV. “ The Bachelorette India” show that was presented by Rohit Roy in the Life OK channel was also one of the most talked about Reality Shows, where Mallika Sherawat would ‘find’ her ‘ideal husband’. The 2014 Hawaii Five-0 TV serial is another Show where she has shown her capacity. This time it was in the role of ‘ Farah Khan’ in the Episode 21 of the Season 4. Mallika Sherawat is famous for her bold attitude both in her movies and public statements and comments. She once said in October 2013, as reported in The Times of India, that her ideal men would be Narendra Modi, Hrithik Roshan and Rajini Kanth, while expressing difficulty in forgetting her own father Mukesh Kumar Lamba’s betrayal; he has not shown the kindness and compassion expected from a Father towards a Daughter, and even going to the extent of disowning her. She was married once, in the year 2000, the person was a Jet Airways pilot by the name Karan Singh Gill, and got a divorce the very next year. She was Reema at that time and it was said that she had decided to change her name after that, and had entered the movie field only after that incident. She would describe herself (regarding her failed marriage) as the ‘heartbroken once - beware always’ type but she has also stated that she loves to romance and was always waiting for Mr. Right. Once, she has commented that she sees Karan Johar as the ‘just-right bachelor’. She has teamed up with Bruno Mars for a short movie, called, “Whatta Man” at his Comedy website titled, “Funny or Die”, in September 2012. As for her favorite movies, it would be “ Sholay” of the year 1975 and “ Silsila” of the year 1981 (Both movies are Sanjeev Kumar, the couple Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan starrers), and “ Masoom” ( Naseeruddin Shah and the great Shabana Azmi starrer) of the year 1983. The Play Boy magazine, for its cover, has reportedly approached her, but sensing danger to her name in the supposedly orthodox Indian Movie World, she has turned it down. When the offer for Asian Academy of Film and Television’s Advisory Board membership came up she readily took it, as it would allow her supporting the film education in her country. She has reportedly stated that she has not accepted the role of ‘Saira’ (which ultimately went to Aruna Shields) in the British movie, “Private Moments” of the year 2005. She went on a world tour in 2006, under the banner “Rock Stars”, along with several stars from Bollywood that would include Salman Khan. She was 9th in the 2006 List of Top Actresses of Bollywood, and in the same year, Eastern Eye of UK has listed her as the 4th Sexiest woman of Asia. At the 2006 New Year’s Eve show that was telecast on TV at J.W. Marriot, in Mumbai, she had created a controversy for wearing, what some social activist complained as, ‘a scanty, suggestive, and indecent dress’. Princess Myasa of Qatar is a good friend of hers and Mallika Sherawat has attended the Grand Wedding of the Princess, in 2007. In 2009, she was honored by Jersey City, USA, and in the same year she was made an honorary citizen of LA by the City Council.
