Mehtab

Mehtab is a popular actress in Hindi/Urdu films, having dominated the screen from 1928 to 1969. She was born on April 28, 1918, at Sachin, Gujarat to a Muslim family, and was originally named Nagma. Mehtab acted in a few films such as Second Wife (1928) before her first feature film Kamaal-e-Shamsheer (1930) with W. M. Khan, which was produced by her mother under the banner of Excelsior film company. Her second consequent film was a silent movie, Hamara Hindustan (1930), after which she continued to act in many movies, though they mainly centered around the action genre. She began to branch out and work under different production companies and directors, with her first such starring role in Veer Kunal, opposite Ashraf Khan Ashraf Khan is a Pakistani actor who worked in the >> Read More... , to whom she had her first marriage, though it led to a divorce.None of these films did well in the box office.

Following the birth of her son and divorce, she went on to act in a supporting role in Qaidi (1940), which gave her recognition, particularly for a bathing scene in the movie. This led her to act in several movies Chitralekha (1941), Sharda (1942), Kanoon and Vishwas (1943). Her other movies include Ismat (1944), Ek Din Ka Sultan (1945), Saathi (1946) and Shama (1946). Her last starring role was for Jhansi Ki Rani Jhansi Ki rani is a historical drama based on the >> Read More... (1953), for which Modi had directed, produced and acted. It had shown the aging Mehtab as a young Jhansi Ki Rani and hence had become a disaster among the audience. On a personal side, through her first marriage with actor Ashraf Khan, she had a son, Ismail. Her second marriage was to Sohrab Modi, with whom she had another child. Mehtab met her death on 10 April 1997 at Mumbai.
