She is an Indian film producer, screen writer and director by profession. She was born on 7th Nov, 1973 in a royal family from Bangalore. Her paternal grand father was Raja of Wanaparthy. In Kolkata she attended Loreto House, then she moved on to Mumbai. She did her graduation in Mumbai from Sophia College for Women in the year 1995. Then she did social communications media course for two months but then left for Delhi.
In Delhi she completed her post graduation and got her masters at AJK Mass Communication Research Centre at Jamia Milla Islamia. Actress Aditi Rao Hydari is her maternal cousin. She stepped in her career as an assistant director in the legend film “Lagaan” directed by Gowariker, she also assisted him later in the movie ‘Swadesh”. Before this she also acted in the film “Dil Chahta Hai” and played a role as a supporting actress.
Then she directed and scripted the famous film “Dhobi Ghath” which came in Jan 2011 under Aamir Khan production. She got married to the super star Amir Khan in the year 2005. They first met on the set of “Lagaan”. Kiran Rao was Aamir’s second wife. Currently they reside in Bandra in suburb of Mumbai. They have a son named Aazed Rao Khan. Kiran Rao is basically an Athiest and lives a vegan life style.
