Manhar Udhas was born in Savarkundla, Charkhadi, in the erstwhile State of Gondal, in the present State of Gujarat, India. His father’s name was Keshubhai Udhas, and mother’s name was Jitubhen Udhas, and they were from Jetpur. Well-known singers Nirmal (Fankaar and Navazish Ghazals) and Pankaj are his younger brothers. It was stated in 2003 by his brother Pankaj Udhas that Manhar became familiar with the works of poets like the 18th century Meer Muhammad Taqi Meer and the 19th century Mirza Asadullah Baig Khan (Ghalib), because of Maulvi Saeed Mirza who used to teach him Urdu and related music. He can sing in Punjabi and Bengali and several other languages effortlessly, like he sings in Hindi and Gujarati. In his singing career so far spanning more than 300 movies of different languages, he has worked with almost all the Cinema music composers, and most, if not all, of the movie Heroes have had his voice lent to them in the screen. He is actually a Mechanical Engineer by the education he opted for at his native Gujarat, and searching for a suitable job he landed in Mumbai in the 60s. But his interest in music since childhood made his brother-in-law, with whom he was at Mumbai, take him to Kalyanji & Anandji the music composing duo whose father is from Kutch, Gujarat, and young Udhas has started spending more of his time with the brothers in their music composing activities and sundry.
