It was whilst playing with friends in 2010 when a scout from Tata Football Academy (TFA) saw him and offered him a place in the prestigious institution. He trained at TFA for four years.

After graduation from the academy, he attended a trial for Dempo in 2014 where his performance impressed the then head coach Arthur Papas who soon signed him to the club. Under Papas's guidance and encouragement, Rai played for the Goan I-League outfit's youth teams and had his official league debut match against East Bengal.

Though he was part of the squad that helped the club promote from 2nd I-League division to I-League division, for the most part, he played with the U-19 and U-20 teams. In 2015 he was called up to the national U 23 team for the 2016 AFC U 23 Championship Qualifiers. His debut match in the qualifiers was against Uzbekistan. The following year, Rai signed with ISL outfit Kerala Blasters for the 2016-17 season of the league.

His debut match for the club was against North East United FC where he started the game and played for 78 minutes. He remained on the fringe rest of the league, appearing in one more match. In 2016 itself, he was called up to the senior national team for the FIFA World Cup qualifier but remained benched.

He made an unofficial debut for the team in an unofficial friendly match against Bhutan as a 67th-minute substitute. In 2017, Rai signed Minerva Punjab FC as a loan and played three matches for them in the I-League season and helped the team lift the cup. Later the same year, he was picked by Delhi Dynamos to be part of their squad. For the club, he appeared in 13 matches with an average of 85.49% passing score.

Though the club didn't have a good season, Rai's performance garnered appreciations.
