Fitting in with a lower white collar class family; Sushil Kumar was conceived in Champaran, Motihari, Bihar, and worked as a machine educator in MNEREGA. He used to earn only six thousand rupees per month. Nothing in his life was unique in any way; since childhood he was interested in learning the history of his country and used to keep himself updated with Indian politics. In an Interview he said that history was his favorite class and he always used to learn lessons from different books, even studied history about the people that were not even included in his syllabus.

In 2011 Sushil got the chance of his life, a chance that completely changed everything about him. He was casted as a reality show contestant; Kaun Banega Crorepati (3 July 2000 – Present), aired on Star Plus, sometimes on Sony Entertainment TV. The TV show is hosted by , one of India’s most successful celebrities. In the TV show the contestants are asked questions about different topics, including history and politics, and with each question they earn a certain amount of money. His adoration for history got him what he wanted and won 50 million rupees.

After that, his life changed a considerable measure, and he was casted in a celebrity dance competition in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa (season 5), aired on Star Plus, despite the fact that he didn't win the opposition yet he was among the most loved hopefuls.
