Sujata had a breast cancer before, but she continued to be positive in life. She discovered that she has a cancer before her shoot for the 2007 Bollywood film, Kya Love Story Hai where she played as the mother of Ranveer (played by Karan Hukku Karan Hukku is an Indian model and television acto >> Read More... ). The doctor found a small lump in her breast and after the surgery; she was informed that it was a malignant cancer. The actress lost her hair after doing the chemotherapy and radiation, but she continued to be brave and soon after, she finally surpasses the cancer. 
After this, she did a cameo role in the Hindi serial, Saat Phere – Saloni Ka Safar on Zee TV where she played as the foster mother of Nahar. She received a lot of offers for full fledged roles but Sujata could not accept it due to her health condition. During those times, she preferred on doing cameo roles or some episodic only.

When she’s not acting, she spent time in writing her own book. This thought started when she got ill. Her daughter, Kritika Kumar who studied in US, encouraged her to continue writing, so she was jotting down all her thoughts while she suffered from cancer.
