Uday Mehta is a very well-known talented professor of political science at Graduate Center. He has worked with a range of philosophical traditions. He has worked on many issues. Some of these include freedom and imagination relation, a link of liberalism with colonialism and empire and some of the recent works are war, peace, and non-violence.

He has also written books. The Anxiety of Freedom: Imagination and Individuality in the Political. He wrote Thought of John Locke in 1992. He wrote Nineteenth Century British Liberal Thought in 1999. In 2001, American Political Science Association awarded him with J. David Greenstone Book Award for the best book in theoretical and historical approach. In 2002, he became the scholar at Carnegie Foundation. In Swarthmore College, he achieved his undergraduate degree, and there he studied Mathematics and Philosophy.

From Princeton University, he received P.H.D degree in political science. Then he went to Amherst College and worked as Social Sciences Clarence Francis Professor. About his work as an author, he says that his work is neither based on any approach for pursuing the traditions described by other philosophers nor any effort to reorient philosophy discipline.

Rather these belongs to some of his thoughts and he follows those issues that he thinks to be of most urgency and importance, and this encouraged him to study topics related to history and some of intellectual history, cultural phenomenon, politics and political economy. He was following this for getting best outcome. There existed a good relationship within his friend circle. On this, Uday says that it is not easy to talk about particular friendships in the public forum, but he finds the facts from this. While generally speaking about intellectual and academic life and while learning about ideas from others, then a friendship relation starts existing among them that is related to personal respect. Anyone with prior education experience will find that intellectual ability is more common than mental character.

He adds that intelligence may be even less important than intellectual character. In an interview, Uday was asked what are the points that you observed which helped in facing new dispensation in India that followed recent elections. On that, Uday replied that each year he spends around six weeks in India, and he always tries to keep up with politics of India and can write a lot about India under space of public compared with journals and books. While answering for the question on recent elections in India, he says that for the time being he can’t say much more than highlighting the importance of hardwork to achieve very different outcome in the coming year.

He admits that it was not much frustrating for him to stay away from India than now and it is more urgent today than before to put the effort of one to oppose the government. His work was influenced by a large number of books. Some of it includes - The world turned upside down which was written by Christopher Hill, Brothers Karamazov written by Dostoevsky in which Alyosha Karamazov, Ivan Fyodorovich Karamazov, etc. were characters, another book written by Elinor Ostrom, The Evolution of Institutions for Collective Action which was published in 1990 and Natural Supernatural which was written by M.H. Abrams
