Kavita Lankesh is a lyricist, screenplay writer, and film director of Indian origin. Kavitha, whose parents are journalist P. Lankesh and Indira, was born in Bangalore. Her mother runs a sari shop in the city. Kavitha comes from a family with a notable background in journalism and media publishing. Her father, P. Lankesh, founded the successful weekly tabloid Lankesh Patrike. Kavitha has two siblings, Indrajit and Gauri, with her brother being a filmmaker and her sister, Gauri Lankesh, having been the chief editor of the tabloid. After completing her Masters in English Literature from Bangalore University she studied advertising. Later, Kavitha owned an advertisement agency prior to starting her film career.

Kavitha entered the film industry by directing a series of documentaries on a variety of subjects, including the Siddi tribe, Bannerghatta National Park in Bangalore, and Ninasam - a cultural organization promoting the growth of theater and films.
